Fatherlessness is a major social problem in America today with the problems caused far outweighing the numbers of fatherless children. While the majority of children have loving fathers whether they are a nuclear family or not, there are still many who do not have the close relationship they so richly deserve with their dads. This phenomenon is not limited to divorced fathers nor is it usually a man's choice to not be involved with his children.

Day 29 and 30, 2-3 Jul 08 -Beaver Falls, PA to Poland, OH plus a storm day

Today I met two people I have talked to for years but have not seen much of if at all. John Sims, the president of the Single and Custodial Father’s Network met us in Beaver Falls for lunch at the coffee shop that our CS host worked at. He had his wife Jean and daughter [...]

Day 28, 1 Jul 08 - Pittsburgh, PA to Beaver Falls, PA

After hearing forecasts of morning thunderstorms, we were pleasantly surprised by the sun streaming into the windows Tuesday morning. Since we had been rained out of our bicycle work session Monday night, we set to work rebuilding Stefan’s rack, my rear wheel assembly and packing the bikes. We finally got on the road, looking for [...]

Day 27, 30 Jun 08 - day of rest: We terrorize REI

We slept in on Monday since we had planned an off day; we hadn’t had a day off the road since leaving DC. It helped that our hostess worked for a school and was off as well. Dragging around the house, we didn’t really make it out till after noon and then it was downhill [...]

Day 26, 29 Jun 08 - McKeesport, PA to Pittsburgh, PA

Sunday morning brought a nice hot breakfast prepared by volunteers from the ham radio club. Stefan’s offer to help was turned down, perhaps out of hospitality, or perhaps they didn’t realize that an 18yo male could actually cook even though that’s his MOS in the Army. It didn’t really matter as most of the food [...]

Day 25, 28 Jun 08 - Cedar Creek, PA to McKeesport, PA

Last night was one of our noisier nights. Between the near-constant trains, a dog barking, and one of the other campers cussing and yelling at their kids to shut up and go to sleep, it didn’t get quiet until well after 11, but we finally got to sleep. After all this is over, I think [...]

Day 24, 27 Jun 08 - Ohiopyle, PA to Cedar Creek, PA (just South of

We woke up in our room above the Falls Market in Ohiopyle, PA and the kids got to spend some time watching TV while I caught up on several days’ journal-writing. I still need to sit down with high-speed internet and re-sort the photo gallery as we were simply uploading too many pictures at once [...]

Day 23, 26 Jun 08 - Rockwood, PA to Ohiopyle, PA

We got up and the schoolteachers and us took pictures of each other as we all prepared to hit the trail. Although the trail was theoretically downhill, it still took pedaling as 1% grade is only 1 foot down every hundred feet…..you just don’t have to pedal as hard. The surface of this trail is [...]

Day 22, 25 Jun 08 - Frostburg, MD to Rockwood, PA

We got up the next morning, the young man hit the road and we started packing our gear. In the process, we had plenty of chances to talk to Roland, his wife, and of course, Hannah who turned out to be quite a flirt. Roland tried out my Hennessey Hammock and Hannah of course had [...]

Day 21, 24 Jun 08. Cumberland, MD to Frostburg, MD

Note: the photo gallery is temporarily down while I reorganize it for easier browsing We left the Laundromat in Cumberland thinking that we might try to make it to Frostburg as there was absolutely nowhere to stay in Cumberland. No couchsurfers, no Warmshowers hosts, not even a campground. I had even tried using another website that [...]
